CHAPTER TWELVE

Alex thought she would hear from Chris on Friday at the latest. It had been too late to contact Gary after she realised Chris wasn’t calling, he wasn’t available until Monday. Alex tried to keep herself busy over the weekend. When she came home from taking Charlie to the Zoo there was a message on the answering machine, it was muffled.

“I’m fine Alex, I couldn’t phone. Look I’ve got to go, I love you and Charlie, bye.”

Chris had managed to use an outside line from the admin office. She knew she was taking a chance, but she had to risk it. Alex realised it was the last call to her phone and quickly pressed a button to return the call, she was put through to a recorded message.

Hello, this is Her Majesty’s Prison Addington, for prison visits call 1, for probation call 2 and for all other enquiries please hold.

Alex ended the call. A prison, she’s in prison. Alex called Sam. “Sam can you come over please and help me with something?”

Sam was there in fifteen minutes. Alex had been her boss for years, before she moved schools. But more than that she was a friend. Sam had been there when Chris was undercover at the school, and throughout the investigation. She’d seen Alex fall for her and struggle with her feelings when it was all in the open, Sam had supported Alex as she admitted her feelings. They were a great couple and she cared for Chris. However, Sam didn’t buy that Chris was so suddenly away working, particularly after the conversation she and Alex had had. Alex’s pallor and weight loss also told a different story. Sam had been there for Alex since Chris left, but she knew not to pry, with Alex you had to wait until she was ready to talk. When Sam got the phone call she hoped the time had come.

Sam had barely sat down when Alex told her, she let her hear the message too. “Christ Sam, a prison, the more I think about it the more terrified I get. At the school she could have called for help, just left if there was a problem. But a prison, if anything goes wrong she’s stuck there with god knows who after her.”

“Alex, you need to not jump to conclusions until you have more information. She could be an officer, and living outside the prison.”

“No, she would have been able to call me if that were the case. She’s inside I can feel it.”

Sam suddenly had an idea. Where’s your laptop? She looked at the prison information hoping to reassure Alex, maybe it was an open prison, with low level offenders. Sam soon realised she had made it far worse. HMP Addington turned out to have the worst female offenders in England, including high risk sex offenders. Instead of reassuring her she had worried her more. Chris was a police officer and in one of the hardest prisons in the country.

Sam held Alex as she cried, she was angry.
